TPI ATR Channel

The TPI ATR Channel indicator for NinjaTrader 8 plots dynamic volatility bands around price using the Average True Range (ATR). The upper band is calculated as the current bar's high plus the ATR value, while the lower band is the current bar's low minus the ATR value. This creates an adaptive channel that widens when volatility increases and tightens when the market calms -- giving you a visual map of where price is likely to stay and where a breakout may occur.

The ATR calculation uses the Wilder smoothing method, which is the industry standard originally developed by J. Welles Wilder Jr. The default lookback period is 14 bars, but you can adjust it from the properties panel to match your trading style. Shorter periods (7-10) make the channel more reactive to recent volatility, while longer periods (20-30) produce a smoother, more stable envelope. The entire calculation is performed manually within the indicator with zero built-in NinjaTrader indicator dependencies, ensuring a clean single-file installation.

Beyond the visual bands, TPI ATR Channel actively monitors the ATR trend and classifies volatility into three states: Expanding (ATR rising more than 2%), Contracting (ATR falling more than 2%), or Stable (within the 2% threshold). This volatility regime detection is displayed on the glassmorphism dashboard positioned in the top-right corner of your chart, along with the current ATR value in points. When the volatility state changes during live trading, a popup notification appears at the top-center of the chart for 8 seconds, alerting you to prepare for a potential breakout or range-bound conditions.

Traders use ATR channels in several practical ways. When price touches or pierces the upper band, it signals an overextended move to the upside -- useful for scaling out of longs or considering mean-reversion shorts. When price touches the lower band, the opposite applies. The channel width itself is a powerful filter: a widening channel suggests trending conditions where breakout strategies excel, while a narrowing channel indicates consolidation where reversal or range-bound strategies perform better. Combining TPI ATR Channel with a trend indicator like TPI Extender or TPI Blaze gives you both direction and volatility context.

The upper and lower band colors are fully customizable, with teal and coral defaults that provide excellent contrast on both light and dark chart backgrounds. Line width is adjustable from the properties panel. The indicator plots on the price panel as an overlay, so it does not consume additional chart space.

The glassmorphism dashboard displays the current ATR value, the volatility state (Expanding, Contracting, or Stable), and a help button that opens an interactive overlay explaining how to interpret the ATR channel. This makes TPI ATR Channel accessible even to traders unfamiliar with ATR-based analysis.

TPI ATR Channel integrates the TPI license activation system -- upon first use, an on-chart activation screen displays your Machine ID with a copy button and an ACTIVATE button for entering your license key. The indicator also includes the TPI propfirm promo ticker at the bottom and a rotating promo popup card, both of which can be toggled off.
